Dr Monique Atkinson
Fertility Specialist and Paediatric & Adolescent Gynaecologist
BSc (Adv) MBBS (Hons 1) MRepMed FRANZCOG CREI
”While working with some of the team who played a part in the early IVF success stories, I observed their dedication and attention to detail, which led to those first babies being born following IVF. Particularly in an era when fertility can feel like big business, this is the kind of dedication I commit to every day with my patients.”
– Dr Monique Atkinson
I have held a passion for reproductive medicine for over fifteen years. I am humbled by the trust my patients place in me to be part of such a significant stage in their life. Whether it’s couples hoping to hear their baby’s heartbeat, or young girls navigating the ups and downs of puberty, I take the time to listen and respect people’s individual decisions and needs.
I have always been inspired by the science behind fertility. I remember being in awe of my teacher in Year 9 science talking about IVF. Then, before I went on to study medicine, I studied Advanced Science where I was amazed by the molecular events behind fertilisation and embryo implantation — everyday events we take for granted.
When completing my undergraduate degrees at the University of Sydney, I was selected into the Talented Student Program, which gave me the opportunity to complete reproductive science research. I also worked as a scientist assisting with patient care in the laboratory at Westmead Fertility Centre.
I then trained as a Junior Doctor across Western Sydney, where my dedication to patient care saw me recognised as Intern of the Year and my passion for women’s health led me to train as an Obstetric and Gynaecologist Specialist. I also completed a Masters in Reproductive Medicine at the University of NSW, earning High Distinction.
I completed most of my CREI subspecialty training through Westmead Fertility Centre, one of the busiest fertility centres in Australia. This granted me an incredible opportunity to handle a broad range of fertility problems and carry out a large number of procedures, allowing me to hone my skills to optimise success for my patients.
I was elevated to a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (FRANZCOG) in 2021, and then completed my Certificate in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI). As the Clinical Director in training at Westmead Fertility Centre I provided clinical expertise to assist with process improvements, innovations and new services. In 2022, I established the Fertility Clinic at Blacktown Hospital, where I still work as a Fertility Specialist for Westmead Fertility Centre. I also work as a Paediatric & Adolescent Gynaecologist at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
My focus on the scientific and clinical aspects of reproductive medicine helps me bring clarity to patients who need complex information explained simply. And my passion makes me determined to do everything I can to help you build your family.
As a CREI subspecialist, Dr Monique Atkinson is one of less than eighty Doctors Australia-wide who have attained this highest recognised qualification for Fertility Specialists and Reproductive Gynaecologists.
Following years devoted to training and research in reproductive disorders and Paediatric, Adolescent Gynaecology, she is well prepared to help patients along their fertility journey, or young girls along their journey to adulthood.
